Why Study Sociology Here?

Full course name: Sociology AS
Year running: 17/18
Awarding body: OCR GCE

Do you think racism or sexism exists in Britain today? Why did the riots happen in London in the summer of 2011? Who has the real power in our society? Is it the government, the global financial markets or is it the media? These are questions that sociologists investigate with the use of research and theoretical analysis. We examine the processes that shape our behaviour such as education, media, family or religion as well as aspects of identity that affect life chances such as ethnicity, gender, social class and age. Sociology explores issues of power, social control, communication and inequality in a global context. In 2016, Sociology students achieved some of the highest grades in the College, with 23 students achieving A*/A grades. We host an annual Social Sciences conference, ʻThe Campaign For Social Scienceʼ, which will give you the opportunity to meet and learn from world-renowned sociologists.

You will study topics such as Socialisation, Culture and Identity, The Media, Sociological Research Methods, Social Inequality and Difference, Globalisation and The Digital Social World and Education.
